Crisis Management Quickies: Attacking the Root

The best crisis management in the world can’t help if you don’t fix the root of the problem

When it comes to crisis management, messaging and tactics can be used to mitigate damage and alter stakeholder perceptions, but there’s one simple fact that is often overlooked – you have to actually solve the root of your problems!

Too often we see organizations get lost in the activities required to control communications and stop the bleeding while ignoring the fact that they have an issue that will only continue to create crises if left unchecked. This results in wasted time, money, and eventually a lot of pain as they fall back into the very hole they had just dug themselves out of.

The ideal situation is to have two teams, one tasked with managing the crisis at hand and one tasked with resolving whatever sparked it. Of course this isn’t always realistic, and often you’ll find yourself juggling both. Keep communications flowing about both the crisis and what you’re doing to fix it, and back that talk up with action.
