Look, Halloween is fun. But you're not here to read about the happy stuff. Crisis management can be a grim business, but if someone's not thinking about what could go wrong in connection to your organization then you're inviting a great deal of risk.

Every holiday comes with its own set of risks, and Halloween is one of the most troublesome for many. Masks and other disguising accouterments are the norm, teens have their trouble meter cranked to 11, and there are hordes of people from toddlers to senior citizens traveling through streets and flooding public venues of all kinds, most paying little attention to where they step or whether they stray into the path of danger.

It's October 31st and I'm willing to bet that a number of you reading this work in industries like retail, amusement and schools - in other words the focus of tonight's fall festivities. How many of you have made specific plans to deal with costumes? How many of you have decided (in advance!) what you'll say if there is an incident at a venue you're responsible for?

It's been a wild year folks, don't let a lack of foresight make you tomorrow's headline. Plan for the predictable and hope you don't need it, that's the crisis management motto.
