Rio Olympics – Bold Words, but Where’s the Action?

Making broad statements with no backup isn’t the way to restore lost reputation

Following weeks of international pressure, organizers of the 2016 Rio Olympics are backing away from statements declaring they would not be testing admittedly polluted bodies of water that are to be used in several events. An AP investigation brought the problem to light, and its findings have been supported by the statements of athletes currently on-site and training in the water despite what’s being reported as near-septic conditions.

We previously criticized Olympic organizers for failing to speak with openness and clarity, and while it’s a promising move to see them finally admitting viral testing is necessary, stakeholders are left to wonder what exactly they’re doing. Reuters reported on several bold declarations made by organizing committee head Carlos Nuzman, including:

“We are working very closely with the State government and the researchers and I am sure we will have no claims (that the water is dirty) during the Games.”

“I have no doubt we will have no problems with the sailing at Guanabara Bay. Other Olympic cities have had problems with the waters and fixed them in time and Rio will do the same.”

“This is a very serious matter and we are doing our absolute best to protect the athletes’ health.”

What Nuzman didn’t share was any concrete actions that will back this talk up. When you fail to provide that, everything else is just hot air. Further, you can be certain these statements will come back to haunt the committee should they fail to live up to the promises made.

When you’re facing criticism, by all means declare you’ll fix the problem. What needs to accompany that declaration, however, is some description of the actual action you’ll take. Remember the Three C’s of Credibility – confidence, competence, and compassion. Demonstrate them in both communication and action and you’ll keep your reputation secure.
