Make sure you know who can see your posts!

Have you been using the “Who can look up your Timeline by name?” setting on Facebook to keep your online actions hidden away from employers and coworkers? If you are, Facebook has an announcement for you; this setting is being removed!

While there are reminders going out, and Facebook has detailed plans to notify affected users, we wouldn’t be shocked at all to hear some horror stories from individuals who either neglect to edit their page in time or somehow don’t get the message at all.

Is this a smart decision from an organization whose bread and butter is getting users to share as much as possible? We’re really torn. On the one hand, encouraging users to select the desired audience for each post could lead to less privacy issues, if it’s actually embraced, but it’s not exactly intuitive, a key factor when your product is used by everyone from tech wizard teens to their great grandmothers (some of whom, admittedly, are pretty darn techie these days themselves)

What’s the crisis management lesson in all this? You absolutely HAVE to stay on top of changes in the services you use, especially with how rapidly social media platforms evolve. It takes an investment of time, whether you’re reading industry newsletters or catching update info on Twitter.  But when that time spent could literally save your job, or put your organization in position to capitalize on a change the second it hits, wouldn’t you say it’s worthwhile?
