Seeing is believing when it comes to having competence and confidence to get the job done

World-class athletics are not only about the physical battle, but the mental game. A perfect example is Arthur Ashe, who combined extraordinary talent with superb understanding of a winning mentality to break barriers and establish himself as a tennis legend, sharing insight like the below along the way:

“Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner. Even if you are behind, a sustained look of control and confidence can give you a mental edge that results in victory.” – Arthur Ashe

This isn’t only true for athletics of course, but crisis management as well. Ashe nailed two of what we call the Three C’s of Credibility – confidence, competence, and compassion, with the latter being one you don’t typically see in the midst of a sporting competition, but that is absolutely vital if you wish crisis communications to be heard.

It’s perfectly natural to feel frazzled and near panic when you’re tackling a major crisis, but showing that to stakeholders isn’t doing you any good at all. Display the image they want to see, and watch their faith in you rise.
